Why I Created AuthorHER™
Before I ever created a writing program, I was a woman with a story. I survived the Pulse Nightclub shooting. I was shot twice and held hostage for three hours. I came out alive — but forever changed. And I knew I had a story to tell.
But when I tried to tell it, the publishing world told me I didn’t fit. My literary agent believed in me and worked hard to get my book sold, but publisher after publisher passed. The feedback was often the same: “It just doesn’t resonate,” or “I’m not sure how we’d sell this.” Meanwhile, I watched other survivors from the same tragedy — and other very public ones — get offered book deals for their activism and stories. And I couldn’t ignore what I was seeing:
Black women survivors are often overlooked.
Even when we show up with truth, purpose, and power, we’re told our stories are too hard to package. Too raw. Too real. I started to question if I was worthy of having my story told, wondering if I wasn’t the “right kind” of survivor. I had to fight to be seen — and still be rejected.
Eventually, my agent said something that changed everything: “Maybe it’s time to publish it yourself.” And I did. Because when the system didn’t make space for me, I created space for myself.
That’s the heartbeat behind AuthorHER™.
This isn’t just a writing course. It’s a reclamation space. It’s for women — especially Black women — whose voices have been dismissed, delayed, or distorted. It’s for the woman who has something to say, even if the world hasn’t learned how to listen yet. It’s for the visionary, the survivor, the mother, the teacher, the creative — the woman with a story that won’t let go.
AuthorHER™ exists to remind you that you don’t need a publisher to say your story matters. You don’t need a massive platform to prove your voice has power. You just need the right support, structure, and sisterhood to bring it to life.
